Japanese Festival Food: Obanyaki

Japanese Festival Food: Obanyaki photo

Few festival foods spark as much regional debate as obanyaki. Depending on where you are in Japan, you might hear it called imagawayaki, kaitenyaki, jimanyaki or another of several other local names, but they all refer to the same comforting treat: a round, thick pancake filled with sweet bean paste traditionally.

Made by pouring batter into a special mould, adding a filling, and sealing it with a second layer of batter, obanyaki is cooked until golden brown on the outside while remaining soft and fluffy inside. Traditional varieties are filled with smooth or chunky red bean paste, but modern versions often feature custard cream, chocolate, sweet potato, matcha, or even savory fillings.

Although commonly found at festivals and seasonal events, obanyaki is also sold year-round at food stalls, shopping streets, and specialty shops across Japan. It's warm, freshly cooked texture makes it particularly popular during the cooler months.
