5 Fruits Under 150 yen in Saitama Supermarkets

The 8th of every month is "Fruit Day" in Japan. You can read about the monthly anniversary here on City-cost. If you want to celebrate "Fruit Day" by indulging in some fruit, it doesn't have to mean splurging. In Saitama's supermarkets, and presumably countless other supermarkets around Japan, there are plenty of small, sweet options of fruit for under 150 yen.

1. Bananas

For the moment, it is still possible to get bananas for less than 150 yen in Saitama. They are a classic budget hero. I can get a small bunch for about 128 yen. The great thing about bananas is, if stored correctly, they can last days.

2. Mikan Packs

During prime season, ironically Mikan can be quite expensive, but out of season you can often find small packs of mikan for about 100 to 150 yen. Imported oranges are often sold at discounted prices at this time of year too. They make great snacks on the go with their hard yet easy to peel skin.

3. Apples

Many supermarkets sell "small" or "value" apples individually, for about 98 to 128 yen. One apple doesn't go far as a stand-alone treat, but if you are cutting them up to add a piece or two to a bento or as part of a mixed fruit snack, they go further!

4. Grapes

My local Beisia in particular has a great "mini fruit cup" section. They don't seem to be as popular as whole fruit in Japan, but they can work out really economical. At this time of year, you can get mini cups of grapes for as little as 100 yen.

5. Pineapple Chunks

Same as above - supermarkets often sell pineapple chunks in the mini cups. Buying a whole pineapple can be very expensive, but I can pick up mini cups with about 8 to 10 pieces of pineapple for about 148 yen.

These options are great for lunchboxes, quick snacks, after dinner or a little color in your day. Can you think of any other examples?
