Peonies Bloom

In 2026, April 30th marks the start of the final micro season of "Grain Rain", which is the sixth solar term of the year. This micro season is known as Peonies Bloom 牡丹華 (Botan Hana Saku). Overall, it is the 18th micro-season of the year.

April 30th falls within the extended Golden Week period, but it is not a public holiday. In general, the period around Golden Week, and the micro season of "Peonies Bloom", brings many different type of flowers in bloom. Ironically, in the Greater Tokyo area, in recent years, the peonies themselves are not 'beginning' to bloom, but in some cases have actually passed peak.

In Japan, peonies have long symbolized honor, prosperity and graceful strength and their brief flowering invites us to slow down and appreciate fleeting beauty. An invitation to, to adapt an English saying, stop and smell the peonies! Also, in the micro-season, the days grow warmer and the light appears softer.
