The Careful Art of Naming a Child in Japan
Choosing a baby's name is a major decision anywhere in the world, but in Japan, the process often involves far more than simply selecting a name that sounds appealing.
One of the biggest considerations is the kanji used to write a name. While many Japanese names can be pronounced the same way, different kanji give entirely different meanings. Parents may choose characters associated with qualities such as kindness, wisdom, honesty, beauty, strength, or success. A single name might have dozens of possible kanji combinations, each carrying its own nuance and symbolism.
Another factor is the number of strokes used to write the kanji. Some families consult a traditional practice known as seimei handan (name fortune-telling), which analyzes stroke counts and is believed by some to influence luck, health, relationships, and future success. As a result, parents may alter the kanji they choose to create a more favorable stroke count.
Pronunciation is also important. Some parents prefer traditional readings that have been used for generations, while others look for more unique combinations. In recent years, unusual names known as kirakira names ("sparkly names") have attracted attention for their creative readings, although they can sometimes be difficult for others to read.
Family traditions may also play a role. Some families pass down a particular kanji across generations, while others choose characters that reflect the season, a special event, or hopes for the child's future.
Whether guided by meaning, sound, appearance, tradition, or even fortune-telling, the naming process in Japan is often a thoughtful balance of culture, identity, and aspirations. Long before a child takes their first steps, many parents have already spent countless hours choosing the characters that will accompany them throughout life.
