A Day for Blades n Japan
Today, and November 8th annually, is Blades Day in Japan 刃物の日 (Hamono no hi) in Japan. "Hamono" can actually refer to any type of cutting or sharp instrument, but in this instance, it seems to be about blades. Things like knives, scissors, razors and other blades that are used in daily life.
November 8th, 8/11, was chosen for the annivesary as it can be read as "ii (11) ha (8) mono", meaning "good blades" but it can also mean "good knives" or "good cutlery". The anniversary is particularly associated with blade-producing regions such as Seki in Gifu Prefecture, one of Japan's most famous centers of swordsmithing and knife manufacture.
Japan's blade-making tradition stretches back centuries. Techniques originally developed for crafting samurai swords were later adapted for household and professional tools, helping establish a reputation for sharpness, precision, and craftsmanship that continues today. Japanese knives are now highly regarded around the world by professional chefs and home cooks alike.
