A day for Japanese Gardens

Garden Day 庭の日 (Niwa no hi) is an anniversary of April 28th in japan. It was established by the Japan Federation of Landscape Contractors to celebrate the beauty and cultural depth of Japanese gardens. The date comes from a play on how 4/28 can be read as "Yoi (4) ni (2) wa (8)" meaning a good garden.

It is also a good season for an anniversary like this as gardens are in peak condition with fresh, new green leaves and flowers. It is also the week before "Greenery Day" which falls on May 4th annually. The day was created to encourage people to rediscover how gardens bring calm, richness, and seasonal awareness to everyday life. Even a small green space can soften the pace of modern living and reconnect us with nature.

Japanese gardens have evolved over more than a thousand years, shaped by shifting aesthetics and philosophies. Each style reflects a different way of seeing the world. These spaces rely on suggestion rather than excess, using stone, water, moss and carefully framed views to evoke landscapes far larger than the garden itself. This tradition of "borrowing scenery" and valuing meaningful emptiness remains a hallmark of Japanese design.
