Are You Ready for Winter? Infection Prevention Day in Japan

As the seasons change and the air turns cooler, Japan marks Infection Prevention Day (Kansenshō ni Sonaeru Hi) . Timed to fall on Rittō, the traditional beginning of winter, which this year falls on November 7th. The commemorative day was established by the Japan Association of Healthcare Initiative (JAHI) to encourage people to think about their health and prepare for the winter months.

The timing is no coincidence. Rittō marks a period when temperatures begin to drop rapidly, the difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures becomes more noticeable, and the dry air creates conditions in which illnesses such as influenza can spread more easily.

For many of us, preparing for winter means bringing out warmer clothes, blankets, or hot drinks. However, Infection Prevention Day is a reminder that looking after our immune system is just as important. The organization behind the day promotes good health habits such as getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, staying active, reducing stress, and keeping warm.
