Shaved Ice Day on July 25th

Shaved Ice Day, celebrated every year on July 25th, was created by the Japan Kakigōri Association, an organization based in Setagaya, Tokyo, that promotes Japan’s long‑loved shaved ice culture. 

The date was chosen for two reasons: first, shaved ice is also known as “na (7) tsu (2) ‑goo (5) ri” (summer ice), matching the numbers of July 25th. Second, on July 25, 1933, Yamagata City recorded 40.8°C, then the highest temperature ever measured in Japan, making the day symbolically perfect for enjoying something cold and refreshing.

Although widely recognized, Shaved Ice Day is not listed by the Japan Anniversary Association, making it an independently established commemorative day. Still, it has become a beloved part of Japan’s summer calendar, celebrating a treat enjoyed since the Heian period.
