Why Dams Matter in Japan

With it being "Forest and Lake Appreciation Week" I have been writing about lakes in particular. When talking about lakes in Japan, it is impossible to ignore the role of dams. Many of the lakes we enjoy for scenery, fishing or season outings are actually reservoirs created by dams.

Dams help secure stable water supplies for homes, agriculture, and industry, especially during Japan’s hot summers and unpredictable rainy seasons. They also play a crucial role in flood control, protecting communities from sudden downpours and typhoon‑related surges.

Beyond safety and water storage, dams generate hydroelectric power, providing renewable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Some dam lakes have become beloved recreation spots, offering walking trails, birdwatching, fishing, and beautiful reflections throughout the year. Dams may not be glamorous, but they're essential and are to thank for many of Japan's lakes.
