A Day for Chewing for Better Health
Today, and October 30th annually, is Chewing for Better Health Day 健康に役立つ咀嚼の日 (Kenkō ni yakudatsu soshaku no hi) in Japan. It is a commemorative day established by a dental clinic in Osaka Prefecture, to highlight the importance of proper chewing for overall health.
The date was chosen because October is often associated with hearty autumn appetites. In addition, with the date 10/30, the "10" represents one (1) mouthful (0) and "30" the amount of times it is recommended to chew before swallowing.
Although chewing is something most of us do without much thought, taking the time to chew food thoroughly can have a number of benefits. It helps increase saliva production, which aids digestion and nutrient absorption. Chewing well may also help prevent overeating by allowing the brain to recognise feelings of fullness sooner.
