How People Relax in Japan
When people think about relaxation in Japan, hot springs are often the first thing that come to mind. While onsen are certainly popular, there are many different ways people in Japan like to unwind, ranging from quiet solo pursuits to active outdoor hobbies.
One thing I've noticed is that relaxation here doesn't always mean doing nothing. In a post earlier today, I shared how living in Japan has led me to embrace hiking, visiting temples and shrines, and viewing seasonal flowers as ways to relax. But there are many other ways people in Japan unwind that might not be so common in other countries. A few examples that spring to mind are karaoke, ikebana (flower arranging), and even spending time tending fields or working on small family farms.
Of course, many people also enjoy more universal forms of relaxation, such as spending time in a café, reading, fishing or gaming. What these activities have in common is the opportunity to step away from everyday pressures for a little while. In a fast-paced world, Japan offers plenty of reminders that relaxation can take many different forms, and sometimes the simplest activities are the most rewarding.
