Devices that help foreigners communicate
Today, and every year on October 9, Japan observes Pocketalk Day, an anniversary established by the company behind the AI translation device Pocketalk. Pocketalk is just one of many tools designed to help people communicate across language barriers, but they all share the same goal: making conversations easier and helping people connect.
I’ll be honest, though, and related to my earlier post about the shortcomings of Starbucks' AI system, I would be wary of relying too heavily on any AI-powered translation tool. That said, these devices are undoubtedly better than having no translation support at all. I can see how a dedicated device would be useful when a group of people speaking different languages are trying to communicate with one another. For many of us expats, however, modern smartphone translation apps are often more than sufficient for everyday conversations and interactions.
Regardless, Pocketalk Day is a reminder that such devices exist and creates awareness about the practical use of communication tools. As international travel, tourism, and multicultural interactions have become more common, translation technology has played an increasingly important role in helping people connect.
