Happy Showa Day!

April 29th is a public holiday in Japan for Showa Day 昭和の日 (Showa no Hi). Showa Day is the start of a series of public holidays known as "Golden Week" in Japan. Showa Day honors the birth of Emperor Showa, as well as the much loved and remembered Showa era.

The Showa era that stretched from December 25th, 1926, to January 7th, 1989. It corresponded with the reign of Emperor Showa (Hirohito), who was the longest-lived and longest-reigning Emperor in Japanese history. The period spanned across many significant events in Japan's history, including World War II, American occupation and rapid modernization. It was also during this period, due to World War II, that the status of an emperor in Japan as a Demigod came to an end.

There are many different events on in Japan on Showa Day. People get out and about and enjoy life. Moreover, many people travel for Golden Week and with Showa Day marking the start of Golden Week it is usually the busiest travel day. Reports on the news today have shown thousands of people queuing in Narita airport and traffic jams on the motorways.

There is a festive feel to the day, but as many people have work or school tomorrow, it is not quite as celebratory as the later dates in Golden Week which are back-to-back from May 3rd to May 5th annually. This year, 2026, because May 3rd falls on a Sunday, May 6th is a public holiday instead.

Will you do anything special this Showa Day? The photo in this post was taken at Seibuen Amusement Park, a Showa retro theme park with some amusement rides.
