Chrysanthemum Festival Season in Japan
Earlier today I introduced the current solar term and microseason in Japan. In both articles I highlighted some of the weather patterns, foods and festivals we associate with the season. But one thing I forgot to mention: it is also Chrysanthemum Festival season in Japan.
In some regions it begins as early as October, but in my own prefecture - Saitama - November is the month for Chrysanthemum Festivals. A Chrysanthemum "Festival" isn't a festival in the typical sense. It generally signifies a display of chrysanthemum. But not just chrysanthemum in a pot, but rather very elegant displays that take great skill to create.
Often Chrysanthemum Festivals, aka exhibitions, are held on temple grounds. But municipalities sometimes host a chrysanthemum exhibition in a public building, park or garden. Some displays charge an admission fee, while many can be enjoyed free of charge.
Not all chrysanthemum festivals are created equally! Some are larger and more famous or popular than others. I think the Bunkyo Chrysanthemum Festival at Yushima Tenjin Shrine in Tokyo is among the most famous, offering elaborate displays. Kasama Chrysanthemum Festival (Ibaraki) at Kasama Inari Shrine is one of the largest.
Have you been to a Chrysanthemum Festival this year and / or in the past? Any you would recommend?
