"Mikan-gari", Mandarin Picking in Japan

One seasonal activity popular throughout Japan at this time of year is mikan-gari (mandarin picking). I was reminded of this today as I picked ripe mikan from our own mandarin tree. Before we had a tree of our own, though, we would join many other families in visiting local orchards. Across Japan, orchards open their gates to visitors from around October through December, with November generally considered one of the best times to enjoy mikan picking.

Although mikan has an English equivalent, "mandarin", the Japanese name is still widely used when referring to the small, sweet, easy-to-peel citrus fruits that are a staple of autumn and winter. Popular mikan-growing regions include Wakayama, Shizuoka, Ehime and Kumamoto prefectures, but you can find orchards and citrus-growing areas in many parts of the country.

Mikan orchards often charge a flat entrance fee and allow visitors to eat as much fruit as they like during their stay. Any fruit taken home is usually charged separately by weight. During weekends and peak season, reservations may be required, especially at popular orchards. Whether picked straight from the tree or enjoyed at home under a kotatsu, mikan remain one of Japan's most beloved seasonal treats.
