Japanese Festival Food: Potato Cheese Dog

Japanese Festival Food: Potato Cheese Dog photo

I previously introduced Korean Cheese Corn Dogs as a festival food. This Potato Cheese Dog is a variation of that. But it is a newer type, which - according to this photo - was created in 2024. This cheese dog version stands out thanks to its chunky potato coating.

Cubes of potato are attached to the batter before frying, creating an eye-catching golden exterior that looks almost like a skewer covered in miniature chips. The stall advertised it as a Korean food item and offered a version containing both cheese and a sausage.

The Potato Cheese Dog is designed to be as photogenic as it is tasty. The promotional images showed the mozzarella stretching dramatically when pulled apart, making it easy to see why the snack has become popular on social media.

In reality, the cheese in ours didn't stretch very much, which was a little disappointing after seeing the pictures. Even so, the combination of crispy potato pieces, savory coating, and warm melted cheese made for a very satisfying festival treat.
