The description
Beisia's crab sticks (crab flavored fish sticks) are a simple, ready-to-use convenience food product. There are 12 in one packet, each with an individual cover.
The good
These Beisia crab sticks are a handy staple for quick meals, especially because they separate easily and have a juicy texture. They work well in salads, cold noodles, or mixed into rice dishes. The biggest appeal is the price: at only 96 yen before tax, they stand out as one of the rare supermarket items that still come in under 100 yen. Each stick comes with a cover on it. Meaning you can handle the stick with no mess. Moreover, it is not a full cover; both the bottom and top have no cover so you can easily use your hands to push the kamaboko up to take a bite from it.
The not so good
Of course, the low price comes with a few trade‑offs. The flavor is mild and leans more toward general surimi than strong crab taste. Despite that, or maybe thanks to that, they are really popular with children. Even though my own children are all teens or pre-teen, they still love Kamaboko and don't distinguish the flavor between these Beisia brand affordable options and the other more expensive kamaboko on the market. The flip side of the partial wrapping on each individual kamaboko is that if you are putting them on / into something like a salad, you need to take the wrapping of each one of the 12 sticks yourself!
