Hibiscus, a birthday flower of July 11th

Hibiscus is one of the birthday flowers of July 11th annually, and it is also the birthday flower of August 10th and August 31st. There are several types of hibiscus in Japan, including a native species Fuyō (芙蓉 / Hibiscus mutabilis), pictured, known for its large blossoms.
However, the tropical hibiscus, Hibiscus rosa‑sinensis, is probably what most people picture when they hear “hibiscus” in Japan, thanks to its strong association with Okinawa and its bright, summery blooms. It has a Japanese name too, Fussōge (仏桑花), a traditional term that has been used in Japan for centuries.
It’s also helpful to distinguish tropical hibiscus from Rose of Sharon (Mukuge), another member of the same family. Tropical hibiscus thrives in heat and produces glossy, vivid flowers, while Mukuge is a hardy shrub common across mainland Japan.
In the Japanese language of flowers, hanakotoba, hibiscus carries the meanings "new love" and “delicate beauty”. The latter it shares with the English meaning. Red hibiscus symbolizes ever‑renewing beauty and bravery, while white hibiscus expresses graceful beauty.
In Japan, hibiscus blooms from May to October, with its peak in the hottest months. In Okinawa’s subtropical climate, it can flower nearly year‑round, making it one of the region’s most recognizable symbols of summer.
