Autumn Reading Challenge at School

Each year, my children's elementary school have a reading challenge in the autumn. It is held in conjunction with the town library. They are given a reading card to complete by December 18th. If they are successful, they receive a small prize from the library.

The reading card has spaces for them to fill out the name and author and a one sentence impression of the books they read. If they read thirty books, they can bring the completed reading card to the library and get a small prize for their effort. They can also get a new blank card upon completing one. If they complete that within the time period, they can get another small token prize from the library. Usually something like a bookmark, pen or keyholder.

I like that they get three months to complete the challenge. It works out at ten books a month. It is probably more than the usual child reads in a month, but it is not excessive. It is a great challenge for them. I think it is a great way to encourage children to read more.
