The description

A smooth mousse made from 'rescued' bananas, layered over crunchy pastry, filled with melting caramel sauce and topped with soy‑whip and roasted almonds.

The good

I was drawn to the Banana and Caramel Cake at Starbucks Coffee due to its photogenic appearance. On reading the menu my interest was further piqued by the fact it is made from "Mottanai" bananas, or "rescued" bananas as I like to call them. See the "A day for fruit rescue" post on City-cost for more about "Mottanai" fruits. The cake is gentle, a bit too gentle for my liking. The mousse is nice and smooth and mellow. The caramel sauce is in the middle of the cake only, so I personally didn't get to it, until my second or third spoonful! The base reminded me of Rice Krispies! Only caramelized.

The not so good

The base was nice, but very hard to get up with the fork. The mousse while smooth was a little too subtle for my liking, left my mouth feeling unsatisfied. There wasn't enough of the caramel sauce. The soy-whip cream didn't do it for me either. I thought I was getting a "sweet" dessert, but it didn't hit the mark for me at all. Overall, I felt that the impact was weak - not enough sweetness, not enough sauce, not enough volume in the cream. Some people may prefer it this way, but it just wasn't for me.
