Prefectural Hometown Day of Toyama

In 2013, Toyama Prefecture created Prefectural Hometown Day 県民ふるさとの日(富山県) of Toyama to mark 130 years since the prefecture's reestablishment. Toyama once disappeared as an administrative unit in 1876, but on May 9th 1883 it was restored when the region of Etchu was separated again from Ishikawa.

May 9th became a symbolic date in Toyama's modern history, representing the prefecture's renewed identity and the pride of its people. Toyama Day encourages residents to rediscover the prefecture's history, nature, culture and industries and to deepen their affection for their 'hometown'.

On May 9th annually, many prefectural facilities such as the Takaoka Museum of Literature, the Museum of Modern Art, the Suiboku Museum, the Central Botanical Garden, Taikoyama land and the Tateyama Museum reportedly offer free admission on this day.

Have you ever been to any of these facilities? Have you ever been to Toyama Prefecture? To be perfectly honest, it's more than 20 years since I visited and I really don't remember much about my visit. I used a photo of tulips for this post, because Tonami Tulip Park was the first thing that came to mind when I thought of Toyama! I hope to revisit Toyama again in the future and learn more about what the prefecture has to offer.
