The description
This dessert is from Bashamichi's Grand Menu. A rich, velvety gateau chocolata served with whipped cream, berries, a drizzle of chocolate and a chocolate piece.
The good
Bashamichi is a Saitama born family restaurant chain with branches around the Kanto plain (Greater Tokyo area). The menu is standard across all branches. The Gateau Chocolat is on their Grand Menu and it has been on it for a long time, which implies that it is popular. I for one like it and often order it when I visit Bashamichi. The gateau itself is really good, not too dense with a lovely balance of richness and refinement. Its fudgy but without feeling too heavy. But for me, the trimmings make it - fresh cream, berries and a berry sauce, plus a drizzle of chocolate as well as a crunchy chocolate piece. Delicious!
The not so good
Today, for the first time I got the Gateau Chocolat as a takeout rather than eating in. I was really looking forward to it when I got home but was disappointed when I realized the takeout version doesn't come with the trimmings - no sauce, no berries, no cream, no chocolate piece. In all fairness, it was still delicious, but not as much as when it has the trimmings too. I wouldn't order it as take out again. However, it is 100 yen cheaper when you get it as a takeout, which I suppose is fair. They don't have branches outside of Kanto yet, so you can only enjoy this particular version of Gateau Chocolat in stores in Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures.
