A Monthly Reminder to Watch Your Salt Intake
Salt Reduction Day (減塩の日) is observed on the 17th of every month in Japan as a reminder of the importance of reducing salt intake for better health. The day was established by the Japanese Society of Hypertension to encourage people to practise healthier eating habits throughout the year.
The date was chosen in connection with World Hypertension Day, which is observed on the 17th of May. But rather than just marking the observance on one day, the society made a monthly anniversary as an opportunity to raise more consistent awareness about the relationship between salt consumption and high blood pressure.
Reducing salt is considered one of the most effective ways to prevent and manage hypertension. The Japanese Society of Hypertension recommends limiting daily salt intake to less than 6 grams for people with high blood pressure. Research has shown that populations with very low salt consumption tend to have lower rates of hypertension and less age-related increases in blood pressure.
Although awareness has grown in recent years, reportedly many people in Japan still consume more salt than recommended. Salt Reduction Day encourages simple changes such as choosing lower-sodium products, using herbs and spices for flavor, and becoming more mindful of everyday eating habits.
