Earthworms surface

This year, 2026, May 10th will mark the second micro season of the solar term "Rikka" (Summer Rises) known as Earthworms surface 蚯蚓出 (Mimizu izuru). It follows the micro season "frogs begin to sing" and precedes "Bamboo Shoots Arise".  It will last for five days, to and including May 14th.

The name of the solar term indicates what happens this solar term in nature. We will begin to see earthworms hatch and surface in this period. They will become more active here on out. Like in many other countries around the world, worms are known as "nature's plough" as they turn and aerate the soil. Moreover, the presence of worms is said to indicate fertile, living soil.

The presence of worms is also a sure sign that morning frost is behind us. Now the soil is warm enough to promote life. The top layer of earth has softened and there is a more distinct smell from the soil. Around this period, we see more and more insects daily as well as hear more bird and frog songs. Just today I heard a bull frog sing. Many flowers are in bloom, and it is usually around this time we get our first scent of roses.
