Past Peak, but Still Popular: Cute and Chaotic Stitch

Today, and June 26th annually, is Stitch Day スティッチの日, as in the character Stitch (pictured) of the animation Lilo & Stitch. It is an anniversary created by Walt Disney Japan. They chose the date because it fits perfectly with Stitch's designation in the film Lilo & Stitch - he is Experiment 626, a genetically engineered alien.

The original film premiered in the United States in 2002 and later reached Japanese theaters in March 2003. Its mix of Hawaiian warmth, found‑family themes, and Elvis Presley music quickly won over audiences, leading to sequels, TV series, and a huge wave of character goods that remain popular today. In Japan, his cuteness coupled with mischievous, much like Doraemon or Crayon Shinchan, won the hearts of many and he continues to have a steady fanbase.

You can still find Stitch goods in stores, crane games and of course at Disney, but I find that the choice isn't as good or expansive as it was ten years ago in Japan. I have a Stitch loving daughter. I occasionally pick her up some Stitch character goods in Japan, but last year when I was at home in Ireland there was a much greater choice. She was delighted with all the Stitch themed 'omiyage' I brought her back from Ireland!
