Thinking Beyond Calories: Low GI Day and GI Week

It is always good to see health focused anniversaries among Japan's many daily observances. Today's Low GI Day 低GIの日 is a perfect example. A day to raise awareness about the Glycemic Index. Moreover, it is not just one day - Low GI Day marks the last day of a weeklong observance known as Low GI Week 低GI週間.

GI stands for Glycemic Index, a measure of how quickly carbohydrates in food affect blood sugar levels after eating. Foods with a lower GI are absorbed gradually, resulting in a slower rise in blood sugar.

The commemorations come at a fitting time of the year. Autumn is often called Japan's "season of appetite," with freshly harvested rice and many seasonal foods tempting people to indulge. The organizers hope that learning about low-GI foods can help people maintain a balanced and healthy diet while still enjoying their meals.
