Japan Goals: Matsue City

It has long been a desire of mine to visit Matsue City for one main reason. Matsue has strong ties with my home country of Ireland, thanks to Lafcadio Hearn, or Koizumi Yakumo as he was known in Japanese, who spent some of his most formative years in Shimane Prefecture.

But my interest goes beyond literary admiration too. Matsue seems to hold a rare blend of atmosphere, history, and calm: a castle town wrapped in water, folklore, and the lingering presence of Yakumo’s gentle observations. I would love to see the landscapes that inspired him and experience the city’s blend of Irish connection and Japanese soul for myself.

Places like Jozan Inari Shrine, a spot Lafcadio Hearn himself loved, seem to capture that quiet charm. Matsue also appeals to me for its classic castle‑town atmosphere. Matsue Castle is one of Japan’s few remaining original castles. The Horikawa boat tours also seem like a beautiful way to experience the city. And of course, I’d like to visit Yakumo’s former residence, which is preserved and open to visitors.

Genkidesu did a great article on "Why Shimane should be on every Japan traveler's list". She also wrote another informative article with the "Top 5 Summer Spots in Matsue"
