The founding of commercial broadcasting in Japan
Today, and April 21st annually, is Commercial Broadcasting Day 民放の日 (Minpō no hi) in Japan. It marks, and also goes by the name of, "the anniversary of the founding of private broadcasting" "民間放送発足記念日 (minkan hōsō hossoku kinenbi)". It is a commemoration of the period when Japan's media landscape opened to a new era of voices, creativity and public connection.
The anniversary traces back to 1951, when sixteen private radio companies received their preliminary broadcasting licenses. It was a turning point that allowed non-government broadcasters to enter the airwaves and begin shaping the soundscape of everyday life. One year later, on the same date in 1952, the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association (民放連) was founded. It established a shared commitment to ethical broadcasting and industry cooperation.
Over time the date became the anniversary it is today. In addition, the week of April 21st to 27th became Commercial Broadcasting Week. For years, TV stations across the country aired special programs and messages from the association president. They may not do that today, but the Commercial Broadcasters Association continues to support high-quality radio and television programming.
