A day for a small portion of Karinto

Karinto is a traditional Japanese sweet made from deep-fried dough coated in a glossy sugar syrup. It comes in different flavors. The one pictured is green tea flavor. It has a crunchy texture and is often associated with traditional type snack shops.

You can buy karinto in many forms, including in packs containing small packets, in supermarkets. One of the companies that is associated with that type, Sanko Seika based in Niigata Prefecture created an anniversary for "small portions" (or packets) of Karinto.

Today, and May 9th annually, is that day - Small portion of Karinto day 小分けかりんとうの日 in Japan. We might say "small packet" or "individually wrapped" karinto in natural English. The company established the day to encourage more people to enjoy Karinto.

Do you like karinto? Do you eat it often? Have you a favorite flavor?
