A day to aim for zero (sun) spots
Today, and April 30th annually, is Spot Zero Day しみゼロの日 in Japan. It is a skincare focused anniversary created by La Roche-Posay, the dermatological brand under the L'Oreal Group. The date for the anniversary comes from the fact that 4/30 can be read as "shi (4) mi (3) 0 zero", which means "zero (dark / sun) spots."
The goal is to encourage people to learn about UV damage and take practical steps to protect their skin as spring sunlight grows stronger. At this time of the year in Japan, the UV levels rise sharply, often reaching the same intensity as early Autumn. This anniversary serves as a timely reminder to buy sunscreen and other products that protect against the sun's rays.
Coincidentally, I had an appointment at the dermatologist's today! I have slight sun damage just below my neck and the doctor recommended that I buy light scarfs to cover the area and use a sun umbrella ALL year round. I was quite surprised to hear she thinks it is necessary even in winter and it really speaks to the level of risk from the sun in recent years.
