Celebrating the Spirit of Dance on Yosakoi Festival Day

Yosakoi Festival Day よさこい祭りの日, observed every year on August 10th, marks the anniversary of the very first Yosakoi Festival held in 1954 in Kōchi City. What began with 750 dancers across 21 groups has grown into one of Japan’s most dynamic urban festivals, now drawing around 18,000 dancers and 200 teams who fill the city streets with color and sound.

Moreover, Yosakoi has spread far beyond Kochi City and Yosakoi Festivals are celebrated the length and breadth of the country at different times of the year. Yosakoi is one of my personal favorite Japanese dance festivals. I love all the colors and rhythmic movement, but it is the flags that really add to the experience for me. Those flags are huge, and heavy, and it is no easy feat to 'dance' them, so I truly admire those who do it with such grace and skill. 

The origin of the name of the festival is really interesting too. It traces back to an old phrase "come at night" preserved in the folk song "Yosakoi Bushi". Today, the festival blends tradition with creativity: rock bands, samba rhythms, vivid costumes, and bold choreography. You can read more about Yosakoi festivals on City-cost here.
