Arare and Senbei Day: Celebrating Japan's Classic Rice Crackers

Japan's many commemorative days celebrate everything from seasonal traditions to favorite foods, and Arare & Senbei Day is dedicated to one of the country's most beloved snacks. Observed on Rittō (the Beginning of Winter), which falls around November 7th each year, the day was established by the National Rice Cracker Industry Cooperative Association to promote traditional Japanese rice crackers.

The anniversary recognizes the rich variety of rice crackers enjoyed throughout Japan and the industry that produces them. Rice crackers have been a popular snack for generations, appearing in everything from family gatherings and tea breaks to gift boxes and festival stalls.

The day also highlights the differences between several types of rice crackers. Arare and okaki are generally made from glutinous rice, giving them a distinctive texture, while senbei are typically made from non-glutinous rice. Both come in a wide variety of flavors, from soy sauce and seaweed to spicy and sweet varieties.
