Aeon Cancels Scores of Events Nationwide Further to the Explosion
Following the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake on July 28th and the subsequent explosion accident at Aeon Mall Kumamoto, Aeon Mall locations across Japan have begun cancelling and postponing events one after another. From late July through August, artist live performances, release events, character shows, film‑related commemorative projects, children’s workshops, and even summer festivals have disappeared from mall calendars.
In the wake of the disaster, Aeon has announced nationwide emergency inspections of gas equipment across all its malls, an urgent response prompted by early findings suggesting that broken LPG pipes may have contributed to the explosion in Kumamoto. While Aeon has not detailed every operational change, the broad inspection effort indicates a temporary shift in staff priorities toward safety verification and facility checks, which likely contributes to the pause in public events.
Interestingly, not all events have been canceled, some will go ahead, perhaps with changes. The move reflects the heightened caution across the Aeon network as the company works to confirm building safety and prevent any further tragedies.
