Respect for the Aged Day in Japan

Today is Respect for the Aged Day 敬老の日 (Keiro no Hi) in Japan. It is a public holiday, that for many years was on September 15th. But with the Happy Monday system, which created more three-day weekends, it was moved to the third Monday of September, which in 2026 is September 21st. 

The day is dedicated to honouring older people for their many years of contributions to society and celebrating their longevity. The roots of the holiday can be traced back to a post-war initiative in Hyogo Prefecture, where local leaders promoted a day called "Toshiyori no Hi" (Old People's Day). The idea was to value the wisdom and experience of older generations and encourage communities to learn from them. The concept gradually spread throughout Japan before becoming a national holiday in 1966.

Today, families often use the occasion to express gratitude to grandparents and elderly relatives. Communities, care facilities, and local organizations may hold celebrations, performances, and social gatherings, making the holiday a meaningful reminder of the importance of respecting and appreciating older generations.
