Japan Travel Goals: Saga International Balloon Fiesta

On my long list of events I want to go is the Saga International Balloon Fiesta, held in Autumn every year. It is Aisa's largest hot air balloon festival with over 120 balloons from across the globe participating. Even for visitors who have never been interested in ballooning, the sight of so many balloons launching together must be unforgettable.

The event combines the excitement of an international competition with the welcoming feel of a local festival. Visitors can watch pilots prepare their balloons, browse food stalls, and enjoy special events throughout the day. The festival is also highly photogenic, offering countless opportunities to capture colorful balloons reflected in rivers, silhouetted against the morning sky, or glowing after sunset.

What makes the Fiesta especially appealing is that it offers more than just a spectacle. It provides a chance to experience a unique side of Japan that many international tourists overlook. Whether you're a photography enthusiast, an aviation fan, or simply someone who enjoys memorable outdoor events, the Saga International Balloon Fiesta is well worth considering.

This year (2026) it is on from Friday October 30th to public holiday Tuesday November 3rd, with official practice sessions starting from October 28th. The event is at the Kase Riverbed in Saga City. They even have a temporary train station for the event - the Balloon Saga Station - that operates exclusively during the festival.
