Cotton Day, Celebrating a summer fabric
Today, and May 10th annually, is Cotton Day in Japan. It was established as an anniversary in 1995 by the Japan Spinners' Assocition, an organization dedicated to supporting the healthy development and maintenance of Japan's spinning industry.
The reason May 10th was chosen as the date of the anniversary is because 5/10 can be read as "ko (5) tton (10)", the Japanese for "cotton". But also because May marks the peak season when cotton garments fill store shelves across Japan in preparation for the summer eat. Cotton has long been valued in Japan (and worldwide) for its durability, low stretch and excellent moisture absorption. Thus, making it ideal for summer clothing as well as comfortable under garments.
To promote the appeal of Japanese-made cotton, the association created the "Japan Cotton Mark" a symbol indicating domestically produced cotton yarns and fabrics. Two related labels also exist: the Pure Cotton Mark for 100% cotton, and the Cotton Blend Mark for products containing at least 50% cotton.
Do you wear cotton in summer? What other fabrics help you keep cool in the summer months?
