Fujiya’s new Fresh Donuts line includes a rich chocolate flavor that’s creamy, comforting, and beautifully balanced. Of the four I have tried, this one easily earned five stars. It’s rich without being heavy, sweet without being cloying, and the cream inside is wonderfully smooth. The pastry has that soft, almost choux‑like top that gives each bite a gentle lift, making the chocolate feel even more luxurious. The chocolate went surprisingly well with the donut, perhaps thanks to the cream creating a bridge between the two!

Honestly, it’s hard to find anything truly negative about the chocolate Fresh Donut. But I suppose that the price is the most negative thing! At 388 yen, before tax, it is a treat for a special occasion, not an everyday dessert. But because it tastes so good I would be tempted to buy it again despite the cost! I suppose you could also say that it is not suited to sharing. So, if you want a dessert to share, it's probably best to pick one of Fujiya's cakes instead. But even these “criticisms” feel minor - the overall balance is lovely, the texture is soft and satisfying, and the chocolate flavor is warm and comforting.
