The First Day of Autumn Higan
Today, September 20th, is the first day of Higan, known as(O)Higan no Iri (彼岸の入り). This marks the beginning of the Buddhist Higan period, observed in both spring and autumn. Higan lasts for seven days, with the spring or autumn equinox at its center.
Higan no Iri falls three days before the equinox. Because the sun rises due east and sets due west around the equinox, many Buddhist traditions associate the western horizon with the Pure Land, making this a time to remember ancestors, visit graves, and reflect on spiritual practice.
Although Higan has deep Buddhist roots, many people today observe it simply as a time to visit family graves and pay their respects to ancestors. With part of the observance coinciding with Silver Week this year, some people may find it easier to travel home, spend time with family, and take part in traditions that have been passed down through generations.
