The Chinook; My Favorite Helicopter to Date

As it is Sky Week in Japan, I am writing about all things connected with the sky, including helicopters. I have already shared how I became fascinated by helicopters in Japan and how they are used in emergency services. During an open day at a Japan Self Defense Forces base, I had the opportunity to see one of the most impressive helicopters I have ever encountered: the CH-47J Chinook.

Unlike many helicopters, the Chinook stands out immediately thanks to its distinctive twin-rotor design and size. Its sheer size is difficult to appreciate until you are standing beside it. The spacious interior highlights just how much equipment, cargo, and personnel the aircraft is capable of carrying. It was one thing seeing it on the ground, but watching it taking it off was an experience I will never forget.
The sight was truly breathtaking. I was captivated by the thunderous roar of the engines, the magical hovering movements and the powerful rotor wash that sent stones, dust, and loose debris flying in every direction. It was at that moment that I truly appreciated both the size and power of this remarkable aircraft. I have to be honest; I fell in love a little bit!
