The Dam Savers of Kamikawa
On a visit to a campsite in Kamikawa a few years ago, I was very surprised to hear music playing all night long. I thought that somebody was having a party down by the lake. But I found out later, that what I was hearing was the theme song of the "Dam Savers".
The "Dam Savers" are local heroes created by the management of Shimokubo Dam, that forms Lake Kanna. Supposedly, due to the urban myth about the lake / dam being haunted, the lake had become a dark tourism spot. To deter "occult detectives," paranormal enthusiasts and most tragically suicidal individuals, dam management play the "Dam Savers" theme song all night long.
Apart from their own theme song, the "Dam Savers" who look a lot like most other masked heroes in Japan, reportedly participate in local events. They may well have had the desired effect, as you hear less about the "haunted dam" in recent years.

Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com
