Japanese festival food: kushiyaki

Kushiyaki (串焼き)  refers to anything grilled on a skewer. It could be meat, seafood, vegetables, tofu, even mochi. It's the umbrella term that includes yakitori. The kushi of kushiyaki means "skewer" and the yaki means "grilled".

The "kushiyaki" food stalls that you find at festivals usually serve larger skewers than at an izakaya, but they are also usually much simpler than their izakaya equivalent. They are fast-grilled to keep up with the crowd and they are served piping hot. They are quite popular stalls at festivals, so it's common to find a long line of people waiting for their turn to pick up a "kushiyaki" of choice.

The "kushiyaki" in the photo of this post was taken last weekend at a shibazakura festival. The sign says it specializes in 'authentic, jumbo size skewers', a selling point at festivals where people want something filling, they can eat while walking. This particular "kushiyaki" stall has a lot of seafood choices but also offers some of the meat favorites too.

What is your favorite type of Kushiyaki?
