"Konamon Day," a day for all things flour
Today, and May 7th annually is Flour Based Foods / Flour Day コナモンの日・粉の日 in Japan. The anniversary was established in 2003 by the Japan Konamon Association, and they chose the date as 5/7 can be read as "ko (5) na (7)" which is the Japanese for flour.
"Konamon" includes things like takoyaki, oknomomiyaki, udon, soba, bread, scones (pictured) and countless other foods made from flour. Staples that shape daily meals across Japan. It also includes pancakes, making it a bit like the West's Pancake Tuesday, but without the religious aspect (Lent) behind it!
"Konamon Day" aims to highlight the charm and promote creative, meaningful ways to enjoy flour-based cuisine. The broader "Flour Day" invites recognition of flour's usefulness in Japan's food culture. Reportedly, in the Kansai region they have a "Konakona Festival" at this time of year where hundreds of shops offer special pricing on flour menu items.
