Cottage beyond compare
This Tochigi City heritage house is swathed in scaffolding in 2023, but for architecture and heritage nerds, it's a must-see now and when the restoration is finished. The gate adorned with shachi, legendary fish talismans, on the gate just after the moat suggests the sumptuous architecture of this gem. In 2023, this exemplary Taisho period cottage is under restoration, but have a look beyond the scaffolding and blue sheets as the interior spares no expense. The house is noted for the vast expanse of zelkova plank flooring which spans the breadth and depth of the house. The cottage is notable for this feature which has greater value than the house itself. From the second floor, on a clear day, you can see Fujiasan, Nataisan, and Tsukabasan, three sacred mountains of the Kanto region. The gardens surrounding the house have enticing features - a bamboo grove, a moat, and a koi pond.
