Iconic and eternal bell tower
On approach to the iconic Toki no Kane, the bell of time, in Kawagoe City, I saw the tower silhouetted by the evening sky and two kimono-clad women preceded me. It sounds cliche, but it really felt as though time had stopped for a moment at dusk somewhere in the Edo era. To get the full effect, note that the bell is struck four times a day - 6 a.m., noon, 3 p.m., and 6 p.m.

Must-see for locals and visitors alike
When we lived on the outskirts of Tokyo, Kawagoe was one of our favorite places to take our international visitors -- it's the kind of place with bucketloads of step-back-in-time charm! The bell tower definitely is the heart and soul of Kawagoe as the other review mentioned, but the street it's on does get super busy on weekends. If you can make a weekday trip, I'd highly recommend that!

The Symbol and Heart of Kawagoe
Toki no Kane is the symbol of Kawagoe. Toki no Kane means Time Bell Tower, but more often than not the tower is called by its Japanese name rather than translated. Even on Google Maps it is listed as Toki no Kane. More than just the symbol of Kawagoe, the Bell Tower is seen as the center of the tourist area of Kawagoe. To be honest, I give it 5 stars now because I have come to appreciate all that it represents, but I do remember the very first time I saw it (and knew absolutely nothing about it) being rather underwhelmed!
