A picturesque stroll along a river lined with heritage buildings

For weekend getaways, I've sought out places that capture a bygone era, and Tochigi City's Kuranomachi Promenade drew me in with the Tomoeha River and antique architecture. The promenade starts at a point just 10 minutes from Tochigi Station's north exit. The path is lined with willow trees, old-fashioned lamp standards, and some of the city's preserved buildings. Many of the attractions - the river boat cruise, museums, and places to eat - are close to the path, so you can weave your way into the side streets and back to the riverside walk. I spotted some kimono-clad visitors taking pictures on the stone bridges that span the river. This is a great spot for keepsake photos.
