One of those must visit places

Kegon Falls is one of those special, 'must visit' places when you are in Nikko. A lot of the bus tours incorporate it into a day trip to Nikko. It was on such a trip that I first visited the Falls. It was lashing rain - torrential rain - they day we visited, so I didn't get any photos. Even still, I was suitably impressed by the beauty of the falls. It was Autumn at the time and colors were magnificent, although they were dulled by mist and rain clouds! There is no entrance fee, but if you want to use the elevator to the lower observatory, it costs 550 yen.

A soothing view any time of year

Kegon Waterfall is a spectacular plunge of 97 meters at the outlet of Lake Chuzenji in the world heritage city of Nikko. The falls are named after a Buddhist sutra cascade into a valley rimmed with lush vegetation. It's something primordial and contemplative to see. There is a lower deck with paid admission but I always enjoy the roar of the falls and the cascading water from the upper path. The best time to go is autumn when the valley's maple trees turn gold and crimson, but it's also lovely in summer as a relief from the smothering heat of the Kanto region.

    Beautiful - especially in autumn!

One thing I have loved about living in Japan is all the beautiful opportunities to appreciate nature here. Kegon Falls is located in the Nikko National Park - and it's a perfect spot to visit if you are headed to Nikko for a weekend of sightseeing at Toshogu Shrine perhaps. You may know that Japan is big on naming "top three" lists for a lot of things - and Kegon Falls is in the top three list for waterfalls in Japan. Knowing just how many waterfalls there are in this country makes that a pretty impressive feat. If you plan to visit Kegon Falls, to me the best time for visiting would have to be in the autumn timeframe when all the leaves are changing. The reds, yellows and browns of the changing leaves make the area look even more gorgeous - you may have to deal with some crowds but it's worth it!
