    Well worth the visit

Like other reviewers have mentioned, a visit to Toshogu Grand Shrine is a must when you're visiting Nikko. I saw that BigFamJapan mentioned going on a rainy day or in winter to avoid crowds, and the rainy day when I visited some years ago was actually such a great experience! It made the whole atmosphere even more ethereal, and I definitely don't think as many people were out as a result. Just a really special place.

    Worth every yenny

The entrance fee to Toshogu Grand Shrine is not cheap at 1300 yen per person, but it is totally worth it. If you go on a bus tour it can work out cheaper, because the tour fee will cover entry into various locations. I really think that Toshogu Shrine is really worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. It is certainly one that will leave a lasting impression. I recommend winter, because it is normally less busy than the rest of the year when you have to queue for everything. Unless its raining - there are usually less people when its raining in my experience. But if you really want to see it at its absolute prime and don't mind queues, Autumn is the best.

    Sensory overload

I've visited Nikko Toshogu many times with locals, foreign residents, and visitors from abroad. Talking with them revealed they had different of this world heritage site. With a Japanese colleague, I learned about the "nakiryu", the crying dragon, an acoustic property of the Yakushido. A priest demonstrated to us the ringing of he ceiling on our visit and we were in awe of the engineering. A professional illustrator from my home country was overwhelmed by the ostentatious decoration of the main shrine, but equally stunned by the simplicity of the three monkeys and the sleeping cat. A sojourn in Japan isn't complete without a visit to Nikko Toshogu Shrine for the history, art, and natural beauty of the place.
