Sacred mountain peak with rigorous hike

Nantai-san is celebrated as one of Japan's 100 mountains and is the sacred object of Futarasan Shrine. The okumiya, back shrine, of Futarasan Shrine is located at the peak at an elevation of 2400 m. The hike up to the peak starts at Futarasan Chugushi, the middle shrine near the shore of Lake Chuzenji. The trails switchback up the mountain on stairs, paths, and forestry roads. There are mountain huts where you can shelter but nearly no services. The hike up and down takes about a day. The view from the peak overlooking Nikko is stunning on a clear day.
