Novelist's home worth a look
If you don't read Japanese well, you might just admire this registered heritage shop and house from the late Edo era. I regretted that I didn't learn more about the novelist before I visited Tochigi City. It turns out Yamamoto Yuzo wrote novels and books for children, many of which are translated into other languages. If I had read up before hand I might have appreciated it more. Inside the misegura, the shophouse, you'll see examples of his calligraphy (with some inspiring and poignant messages for those who read Japanese) and a little museum full of his memorabilia. No matter if you read Japanese or not, the shop has a selection of woodblock postcards of Tochigi City's iconic sights.
