English Teaching Jobs in Miyazaki

I am planning on moving to Japan at the beginning of September as I got a job offer from a university, however, the pay is rather small and I have a husband coming with me there, so we kind of need to find a job for him as well. He has a bachelor's degree in English Philology, and he already speaks the language like a native, and I was wondering what could be the options in a place like Miyazaki for him. As I understood, English teaching jobs are popular for foreigners with a similar educational background as him, is there anything any of you could recommend to us?

English teaching would certainly seem to be the obvious avenue to pursue in this case. Particularly in a region like Miyazaki which is comparatively rural so jobs in other fields may be harder to come by. I feel like an internet search for any kind of job in the Miyazaki region (in English at least) might not turn up much so you will probably have to take your time and try to dig as deep as possible. The main job search sites might reveal something but unlike, say, jobs in Tokyo, Osaka et al, you're going to need to keep checking regularly for something to come up. I visited Miyazaki (the city) last summer and noticed one or two of the big chain schools had branches there (I think I spotted a Gaba and a Shane) so it might be worth checking their sites directly. You could also do the same with any universities in the region. I would think the best way though, particularly for a region like Miyazaki, would be for you both to get settled in first, and then set about networking (perhaps starting with colleagues at your place of work) and making a visit to your city office or any international / community centers near you to find employment leads. I think this will be much more fruitful than job-hunting online, especially if your husband is fluent in Japanese. Following with interest. I'd love to move to Miyazaki!

I would suggest finding an ALT or eikaiwa job. For ALT jobs, there would likely be openings for the summer to cover for people that leave during that time (so the hiring process should be around now), so you need to do a bit of research to see which ALT dispatch companies cover the area you will be in. For networking, JALT is a good NPO to join and connect with.

There are sometimes jobs listed for Miyazaki on the Fukuoka-now.com Classified page, like this one: https://www.fukuoka-now.com/en/classified/urgent-full-time-alt-position-miyazaki/?category=174 (I've worked for OWLS, this dispatch ALT company before. The other ALT dispatch companies operating in Kyushu are Interac, NPO Glad, and KBS -but I would avoid those last two.) It's not clear in your question or in the above job link description if the location is Miyazaki City or elsewhere in the Prefecture. You can always check Gaijinpot.com and the other Japanese job search sites. It's probable that your husband can find local and/or online work after arriving as well. Most work will start in April but start the hiring process as early as October. (Check out the questions and blogs here about teaching online and as a freelancer.)

First of all, thank you all for the recommendations, we will check all of them and hopefully find something. My job is at the University of Miyazaki med school and I suppose it is at Miyazaki-city as far as I could understand even though from the website of the school I kind of got the idea it is still a bit far from the actual city center. Also, I suppose what I wrote was a bit open to misunderstanding about the languages he can speak, so I'd like to clarify that we both don't know Japanese.

My husband is completing his PhD here in Niigata, and I've managed to work for the university assisting with their social media. I wonder if there's any projects like that at the university you'll be working at? I don't speak Japanese other than a few basic words/phrases, but since the university here is English language it hasn't affected me. I do think not speaking Japanese definitely means you have to think outside the box with job options, but it's 100% possible to find stuff (or even create stuff!)

Taking the bitterness out of Goya?

Today is "Goya Day" and as I wrote in my post about it, my MIL is growing some this year so no doubt we'll be given some to cook. I am not a big fan, because I find it unpleasantly bitter. So, following in the same vein as tonetoedo's mentaiko / karako question - what way do you serve goya? Have you any tips for taking the bitterness out of it?

Your 2026 food omiyage / souvenir picks?

I know this question has probably been asked several times in the past, but it is also the kind of question to which the answer changes frequently! So, I am curious - what are your top food souvenir picks for 2026? I am going home again soon, and I want to get food omiyage for several people, including the school where my son is about to finish a one-year exchange. I would love to hear your thoughts on the BEST Japanese food omiyage around this year! And / or the food omiyage you buy each and every time you are going home because it's always a big hit? I just had the photo in this post to hand, and it is not a recommendation per se, it's not bad and fits well into a suitcase, but it's not the best strawberry daifuku I ever had.

Movie locations near you worth visiting?

The live action version of テルマエ・ロマエ Thermae Romae (2012) was shot at Nokogiriyama, Kyonan Town, Chiba Prefecture. It's one of my favourite getaways for hiking, the temple complex, and catching sea breezes. The movie is hilarious and heartwarming. Which Japanese live-action movies do you recommend, and are the filming locations worth a visit? Tell us the original title, English title, the year, and the location.

Recent vending machine discoveries?

I always get a little kick out of finding a vending machine that dispenses something other than drinks or ice-cream. I have been seeing an increase in vending machines that sell religious items lately. I also like finding vending machines with unusual or attractive wrapping. Have you come across any unusual vending machines lately? Either vending machines that sell something other than the norm or a vending machine with eye-catching wrapping?

What are our consumer rights in Japan?

Do you know your consumer rights in Japan? And if so, would you be willing to share anything about them? For example, what is the policy on returns? I am very familiar with my consumer rights in my home country, and they are very widely publicized back home, but information doesn't seem to be as transparent or readily available here. Or is that just me?

Do you have a favorite mascot?

The other day, on "Strawberry Day" I wrote about "Yoshimin", the strawberry mascot of Yoshimi. I thought it might be fun to introduce a few others, so I've just written about "Tokimo" the mascot of Kawagoe. And I plan to introduce a couple of my favorites. It begs the question, do you have a favorite mascot? And how about writing a post on City-cost about your favorite or a local mascot? Pictured "Umerin" who I plan to write about next!

Growing Mushrooms

Here's for a weird hobby. I just saw a video by an American Youtuber that I plan to watch about growing shiitake mushrooms. From what I've seen, it probably needs a bit of space. There was a local market in Fukuoka Prefecture that had a "mushroom room" where they grew and sold mushrooms like maitake and eringi. I also saw a video of a couple in Paris that built a mushroom growing shower room! The local hardware store sells "seeded" logs and shiitake mushroom growing kits. I have seen the logs around people's homes on occasion. It seems like a very odd, but sustainable hobby. Has anyone tried it, or is anyone interested to try this? I wonder how involved or beginner friendly it is.

Hair Color Treatments for Greying Hair

For those of you who have colored grey hair, I'm curious about the hair color treatments available in most drugstores. They seem simpler to use than box dyes. It's been many years since I've colored my hair. It's a chestnut brown and my grey is more silver. I don't hate it but the grey is dry and making me feel like I look older than I am. I'm especially interested in the natural brands that are non-permanent. For example Rishiri Kombu sounds like a decent option. Looking forward to your recommendations and experience.

Entrance ceremony clothes

Soon my kid will have his entrance ceremony at school, and I'm looking for those typical Japanese style ceremony clothes for myself.
